With Operation Iraqi Freedom, the invasion of Iraq, having launched just three days prior, the 18th Annual Independent Spirit Awards (known today as the Film Independent Spirit Awards) became a call for peace from many of those in attendance.

Producer/director Joe Carnahan was among those who flashed the peace sign.

Held the day before the Oscars® on the beach in Santa Monica, the Spirit Awards is known as a place to relax and have some fun at end of the long Awards Season. The dress code, and mood, is casual, as shown by Jennifer Aniston and then husband Brad Pitt.

Scarlett Johansson added a burst of hot pink color as she made her way down the blue carpet.

While Juliette Lewis chose bright cherry red for her accent color.

Having delivered the keynote address to the 1999 Spirit Awards, and hosting them in 2001 and 2002 (also again in 2004), this was a year for legendary Hollywood actor/writer/director John Waters to simply enjoy the show.

Mena Suvari seemed like she came to the beach ready to play!

Matt Dillon delivered his best leading man look!
